The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office tried to calm public speculation about the sightings at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 by issuing this statement on Facebook:
“We have received inquiries in reference to several small planes following each other in a flight path from Cape May Airport (WWD) to around the Ocean View area of the county and back, We have learned that this is a part of an FAA study of new airport lighting. There is no need for concern.”
Rick Breitenfeldt, an FAA spokesman, told Daily Voice on Wednesday, March 13, that the flight tests, to last through the end of this week, are research involving eight aircraft.
"Researchers at the FAA Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, are conducting flight tests for new signage that could be used to identify runway closures," the spokesman said.
Testing began Tuesday at Cape May Wildwood Airport, Breitenfeldt said.
The airport is located in Lower Township.
